Nestled within Meghalaya’s rich cultural heritage and nurtured by a growing pool of talented individuals, the region has recently witnessed the emergence of prominent sports personalities. However, in comparison to other states across the country, the state’s sports achievements appear relatively modest. Even when compared to neighbouring northeastern states that share similar physical attributes, Meghalaya falls short in producing notable sports talents. This disparity calls for focused attention and concerted efforts to unlock the true sporting potential of the state.
Sports centers serve multiple purposes. They provide a space where people choose to attain fitness, engage in healthy activities, and be involved in productive endeavours. Moreover, sports centers also play a role in actively engaging the youth, thereby guiding them towards positive and socially beneficial activities. Recognizing the societal benefits, the government understands that these centers would contribute positively to society as a whole.
To address these concerns and invigorate the sports landscape of Meghalaya, the critical need for well-established and efficiently run facilities is acknowledged. These establishments should serve as centers for sporting excellence, providing institutions that enable youth to channel their energy into this field. By creating platforms for potential sportsmen to grow and develop their skills, regular sporting activities can also be conducted at both local and national levels, allowing participants to showcase their abilities.
With respect to the above, the government is launching the “Fitness and Wellness Scheme”, a credit linked scheme aimed at providing entertainment to the citizens and promoting establishment of sporting units in the state. The selected applicants will receive financial aid to establish Sporting Facilities which may include “value additions” but not limited to gyms, swimming pools etc.
