On 25th September 2025, Smti. Saloni Verma, IAS, Executive Director, MBMA, visited the NELA Handloom Training cum Production Unit of Shri James Dkhar at Mawkasiang. The visit was part of the Training Proposal for Weaving and Loom Operations under NELA Handloom, aimed at enhancing skills and productivity among local weavers.
Strengthening Skill Development in Handloom
During the visit, Smti. Verma observed the training facilities and interacted with the team to understand how trainees will learn to operate various types of looms. Discussions with Shri James focused on:
- The range of handloom products that can be produced at the unit.
- The advantages of modern looms in improving speed and efficiency compared to traditional floor looms.
- Opportunities for scaling production and supporting local artisans through technology and training.
Aligning Training with Ground Realities
The visit ensured that the training proposal aligns with the infrastructure and opportunities available on the ground, reinforcing MBMA’s and PRIME Meghalaya’s commitment to empowering Meghalaya’s weaving community through skill development, innovation, and sustainable livelihoods.
