PSREF and SELCO Foundation Workshop on Energy and Built Environment

On September 12, 2023, PRIME Hub in Shillong was buzzing with enthusiasm as Fellows and Associates from the PRIME Sauramandala Rural Entrepreneurship Fellowship (PSREF) came together for a special workshop on Energy and Built Environment Assessment. Organized in partnership with the SELCO Foundation, this hands-on session aimed to give participants practical skills to understand and assess the energy and infrastructure needs of entrepreneurs across Meghalaya’s diverse and challenging landscapes.

The workshop drew PSREF Fellows from eight blocks across the state—Laitkroh, Mawkyrwat, Umling, Khliehriat, Laskien, Samanda, Rongram, and Baghmara. For each of them, it was an opportunity to gain insights into the realities faced by rural entrepreneurs, who often work with limited energy access, frequent power outages, and tough environmental conditions. This training is more than just theory; it’s about preparing participants to support entrepreneurs with real solutions that are grounded in local needs and challenges.

About the Energy and Built Environment Project

This workshop is part of a larger initiative between SELCO Foundation and the Government of Meghalaya called the Energy and Built Environment Project. The project was created to tackle some of the main obstacles rural entrepreneurs face: from limited energy access and infrastructure issues to the logistical challenges posed by remote, rugged terrain and severe weather. By promoting Distributed Renewable Energy (DRE) systems, the project hopes to provide sustainable solutions that make a difference where it’s needed most.

As participants return to their communities, they carry not just new skills but a mission—to support local entrepreneurs in building sustainable businesses that can thrive despite the hurdles. The vision behind this workshop, and the larger project, is to create a ripple effect of growth and empowerment, strengthening Meghalaya’s communities and driving economic development across the state.
